Canon PIXMA MG3620 Wi-Fi Setup: Every Method, Step by Step
The MG3620 has no screen, so everything is done with the Wi-Fi, Color and Black buttons while watching two lamps. Once you know which button sequence starts which mode, setup takes a few minutes. Below are the Canon-documented sequences for each method.
In This Guide
Before You Start
- The MG3620 supports 802.11n/g/b on 2.4 GHz. If your router uses one combined name for 2.4 and 5 GHz and setup fails, temporarily separate the bands or use a router app option for 2.4 GHz devices.
- Have your Wi-Fi name and password ready (case-sensitive).
- Place the printer near the router for setup; you can move it after.
- Disconnect from any VPN on the computer or phone during setup (Canon’s advice).
Which Method Should You Use?
| Method | Use it when | Button sequence on the MG3620 |
|---|---|---|
| Cableless setup + Canon PRINT app (phone/tablet) | Easiest for most homes | Hold Wi-Fi until ON flashes → Color → Wi-Fi |
| Cableless setup + Canon installer (Windows/Mac) | You mainly print from a computer | Same as above, then run the installer |
| WPS push button | Your router has a WPS button | Hold Wi-Fi until ON flashes → Black → Wi-Fi, then router WPS button within 2 minutes |
| USB-assisted setup (Windows MP Drivers) | Wireless methods keep failing and you have a USB cable | Run Canon MP Drivers, choose Wi-Fi, tick "Set up the network connection via USB" |
Method 1: Cableless Setup (App or Computer)
- Hold the Wi-Fi button until the ON lamp flashes, then release.
- Press the Color button, then the Wi-Fi button.
- Check that the Wi-Fi lamp flashes quickly and the ON lamp is lit. The printer is now broadcasting a temporary network (named like Canon_ij_XXXX).
- Phone/tablet: open the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app and follow the printer registration prompts. When asked, confirm your home network name and enter its password. On Android you may be prompted to connect to the Canon_ij network first.
- Windows/Mac: download the MG3600 series setup software from Canon’s site, choose Wireless LAN Connection, then Connect via wireless router (recommended). The computer briefly joins the printer’s temporary network, passes on your Wi-Fi details, then reconnects to your normal network.
- When finished, the Wi-Fi lamp stays lit.
Method 2: WPS Push Button
- Hold the Wi-Fi button until the ON lamp flashes, then release.
- Press the Black button, then the Wi-Fi button.
- Check that the Wi-Fi lamp flashes quickly and the ON lamp is lit.
- Within 2 minutes, press and hold the WPS button on your router (check the router manual for how long).
- When the Wi-Fi and ON lamps both stay lit, the connection is made. Then install the driver on each computer that will print.
Method 3: USB-Assisted Setup on Windows
Canon’s standalone MP Drivers for the MG3600 series can set up Wi-Fi through a USB cable. Run the installer, choose Use the printer with Wi-Fi connection, tick Set up the network connection via USB, connect the cable when asked, confirm or select your router and enter the network key. Unplug the cable when prompted. This avoids the temporary-network step that firewalls and VPNs often block.
What the MG3620 Lamps Are Telling You
| What you see | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi lamp lit | Wi-Fi is on and connected | Install the driver or app and print |
| Wi-Fi lamp flashing quickly, ON lit | Waiting in cableless or WPS setup mode | Finish setup from the app/computer, or press the router WPS button |
| Wi-Fi lamp off | Wi-Fi is turned off | Start a setup method above (which turns Wi-Fi on) |
| Alarm lamp flashing | An error, often with a count of flashes | Count the flashes and look the number up in the MG3600 series manual |
If It Will Not Connect
- Restart the router and the printer, then repeat the method.
- Make sure you are joining the 2.4 GHz network and the password is correct.
- If the router has more than one access point or is a mesh system, stand near the main unit during setup.
- Turn off computer firewall or VPN temporarily during setup, as Canon suggests, then turn it back on.
- If you changed your router, reset the printer settings and set up again. Canon’s MG3620 instruction is to hold the Stop button until the Alarm lamp flashes 21 times, which initializes the settings (including Wi-Fi).
- Still failing? Use the USB-assisted method above, or see our general Canon Wi-Fi fix guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Hold the Wi-Fi button until the ON lamp flashes, press Color then Wi-Fi, and complete setup in the Canon PRINT app or the Canon installer. If your router has WPS, press Black instead of Color and then the router’s WPS button.
- Usual causes are a 5 GHz-only network, a wrong password, a VPN or firewall blocking setup, or the router being too far away. The MG3620 uses 2.4 GHz.
- Reset the printer settings (hold Stop until the Alarm lamp flashes 21 times), then repeat cableless or WPS setup with the new network.
- No. Canon lists IEEE 802.11n/g/b on the 2.4 GHz band for this model.
- Yes. Use WPS if your router supports it, or the Windows installer with USB-assisted setup.
